Capturing Nature with Colored Pencils

Materials:

Paper:

Legion Stonehenge Pad, 11 x 14 inches

Canson Mi-Tientes Pastel Pad, 9 x 12 inches OR Strathmore 400 Series Toned paper pad, 11 x 14 inches

Dura-Lar film, 0.005”, 9 x 12 inches, pad

Black mat board - cut to roughly 9 x12 inches. At least one piece.
Coquille board/coquille paper (also known as stipple paper), 9 x 12 inches.

Pencils:

There are many wonderful pencil brands out there to choose from. Here are a few that I’ve worked with and highly recommend; look for a set of at least 24 or 36 colors.

Derwent Procolor

Faber-Castell Polychromos Artist Colored Pencils

Prismacolor - Verithin (a harder color lead, great for detail work)
 Prismacolor - Softcore pencils

Derwent lightfast colored pencils

Derwent colored drawing pencils

Lyra Rembrandt Polycolor

Rexel Cumberland Derwent - vintage, but if you can find them, snap them up!

All that said, I would recommend a set of color pencils that are best for blending as it will allow us to explore layering. Here are a few to choose from:

  • Caran D'ache Luminance Colored Pencils
  • Faber-Castell Polychromos Artist Colored Pencils
  • Derwent Lightfast Colored Pencils
Prismacolor colorless blending marker Gamsol odorless mineral

spirit (small bottle) Blending stumps or Tortillons Q-tips

Pencil sharpener

Derwent Blender & Burnisher set (works well with any brand of colored pencil)

Optional (but, oh so cool!) - electric eraser

HB graphite pencil and eraser (gum eraser and Stablo Legacy white eraser)

Graphite transfer paper, one sheet, 9 x 12

Tracing paper pad, 9 X 12 inches

Backing board and artists tape; or a piece of Mat board about 11 x 14 inches would work.
