Autumn Leaves in Watercolor/Gouache

 

Materials List: 

Brushes - Pointed round, synthetic or hair, sizes ~ 4, 6, 8.  Smaller brushes (1, 2 for detailing).

Paper - #140 Cold Press or Hot press, either full sheet cut to various sizes (~ 5 x 8  inches) or a watercolor block (no larger than 9 x 12 inches).   Please choose a high quality paper; Arches, Saunders Waterford, Fabriano Artistico, Hahnemuhle.

Backing board and artists tape if using watercolor sheets

Studio Palette - covered watercolor palette large enough to accommodate colors (see below) and have generous mixing space

 Paints - in tubes.  Please choose artist grade colors from any of the following manufacturers: Daniel Smith (DS), Winsor Newton (WN), M. Graham (MG), Holbein (HN).  You may have your own preferred palette of colors.  The following are colors I love using:

Quinacridone Gold (DS)

Lemon Yellow (DS or WN or MG)

Yellow Naples (WN)

Quinacridone Burnt Orange (DS)

Quinacridone Burnt Scarlet (DS)

Permanent Alizarin Crimson (DS, or WN)

Scarlet Lake (DS, or WN, or MG)

Sap Green (DS, or WN, or MG)

Perylene Green Green (DS)

Undersea Green (DS)

Cascade Green (DS)

Leaf Green (HN)

Rich Green Gold (DS)

Van Dyke Brown (DS or WN)

Ultramarine Blue (DS or WN or MG)

Indigo (DS or WN)

  • I may introduce and demonstrate additional colors not listed above. 

 Gouache - Titanium white

 Paper towels

Masking fluid - either FineLine or Pebeo drawing gum

 Pencil (HB) and eraser

 Hair dryer

 2 water containers - recycled yogurt containers work well

 Salt
